WHAT IF?
Fairfax County Virginia
It was a bright sunny morning.
As I stepped outside onto the porch, white cotton candy clouds lazily drifted across the azure sky as a gentle warm summer breeze kissed my cheeks in passing.
As I strolled towards my white Sienna, I thought about my tasks — getting gas, getting groceries, and getting the mail.
Suddenly my musings were interrupted by what sounded like a clap of thunder in the distance. I was puzzled because there were no dark clouds suddenly appearing in the sky.
I heard it again, and the earth began to shake and tremble under my feet. Are we having an earthquake?
Fortunately I wasn’t far from the apartment entrance as I struggled back to the entrance to the apartment.
I then heard a third clap of what sounded like thunder, and once again everything was shaking.
I finally stumbled into the apartment. I sank down on the sofa and grabbed the remote.
The television still worked. There it was. BREAKING NEWS
New York City was hit by three unknown tactical nuclear missiles. Millions are feared dead — parts of the city are being swallowed up by the surging water.
Other parts of the city are engulfed in flames. New York City is burning.
Then I heard a voice reading from Revelation 18:10 — “Alas, alas, that great city Babylon, that mighty city! For in one hour is your judgement come.”
This is fiction — could it happen?
Therefore shall her plagues come in one day, death, and mourning, and famine; and she shall be utterly burned with fire: for strong is the Lord God who judgeth her.
